Please add any last comments here. ------------------ Thank you. Please add a short review on orthogonal matrices and how to use them to derive LS models in different situations(fractional factorials, center points, quadratic terms) to your lesson plan. The math behind it is really really confusing. Overall, this course is useful. I just wish more time was spent on DOE and process monitoring since these sections seem to be the most relevant to industry. I understand that the first few sections are a good introduction but I feel that more emphasis on forming linear models should be established in class with regard to DOE. I feel that my skill at looking at a scenario and developing a plan for an experiment can be improved. The DOE section of the course is a topic I hope to learn more about and implement. This online course was a big learning curve for me because this was my first time taking such a course. I am more comfortable with traditional lecture where there is teacher-student interaction which in my opinion is the best option for student's learning. Overall this was a good course but i rather have the traditional style teaching where there are 3 lecture per week, assignments, midterm(s), project and final exam. I really liked the way this course was taught. I hope more courses can be taught this way in the future I wish more courses were set-up like this. I feel we get the most out of the material this way. "I think having a tutorial session for 4C will benefit the students. The 50 minute in class activities are quite short and sometimes we feel rushed to finish the in class activities. Rather than analyzing and soaking in the problem we are rushed to just put an answer down without really putting together our thoughts(i.e. brainstorming solutions) as a group. I think working in pairs works best as well rather than threes, where each member can really think about the problems. On another note, I really enjoyed the 2 response surface method (RSM)/optimization activities in class. From watching the videos on RSM, I thought I understood the systematic approach but actually doing an RSM activity made me realize that I had to learn more about RSM." Overall the class was good and I learned a lot, though at times it felt like a lot of work. Nothing which individually took a large amount of time but many tasks spread across the whole term which meant I had to focus on this course constantly. "Statistics is not one of my strong subjects and I was always very stressed for the midterm, and now the exam. Kevin taught this course extremely well. I really like his method of teaching. The first half of the course was basic statistics and I was actually able to learn things a lot better in those first few weeks than I could in a whole semester when I took 3Y03 in second year (not that I'm any better at stats). One concern for me was that I cannot learn well from watching videos online; I need to do hands-on work to better understand material. If not for the in-class activities, I don't think I would do well in this course." "Great course, and thanks for being an 'educator' I will always remember from university. I used some of the information I learnt from 4N in one of my interviews which eventually got me a full time position as a junior consultant! Thanks Kevin!" I've chosen to do this course because I knew, from past experience, that would be effective. And the main reason for me to believe that was the instructor. I really admire the commitment with teaching and this will for improve. I picture myself one day being on the other side of the classroom, and from my observation, I learn a lot important skills that I expect to be able to reproduce on the future. It is really always a pleasure and expiration, not only by the course content, but also from the experience as a student and a participant of this daily teaching experiment for improvement. I'll be always curious about the outcome of this experiments! Hope you continue to search, but I fell that we might be close to the optimum! "I was quite surprised that I enjoyed the course. I think the new learning system was refreshing and the materials presented was well done and on point. The interpretation of each concept really help me have a better understanding. I think the videos and quizzes kept me on track and not fall behind. I was afraid I will fall behind but having the class activities was a motivation to come prepared to class, which was stressful and enjoyable in same time. I recommend this new learning system to be used for optimization course (4G03) as I see many similarities with the format of the material Thank you" "Great course! I really enjoyed the content and the way it was taught! I hope this course helps me in the future! Thanks Kevin" I really like how this course was run, the worksheets during class time really helped me to understand the material, and gave me a chance to ask peers as well as you questions regarding things that I didn't understand, it also allowed for me to help out peers with things that they didn't understand. I REALLY enjoyed this course. I found the material to be some of the most useful I've learned in my undergraduate degree (very broad and able to be applied to almost anything) and I loved the videos/tutorial only class time. The quizzes could have been shorter and the videos prepared earlier, but I understand that this was a learning experience for everyone, so A+ considering it was the first attempt at this! Thanks for a great semester. Because we have night classes (3 hrs capstone class), sometimes it is very tired to watch videos and do the quizzes. How about releasing the videos and quizzes 1 day early. "I feel that a list of previously used R-studio functions would be useful, or mention to the students to complie a library early on. Moving the assignment weighting to the in-class would incentivize learning sufficiently. No-assignments needed. Term-Project is good as-is. Quizzes my be better post-class time in the evening following. Midterm and re-write was excellent as per usual." "Video lectures are very effective. They should be implemented into all courses and replace all lectures. Overall, the video lectures in this course were excellent and I hope they continue for future years. One change I would make to the course is to provide the instructor evalution of the projects before the peer evaluations are due. This would help in the evalution process, and give a greater understanding of how to evaluate others' projects. " "This will be my last feedback for any of your courses and it kind of saddens me. I hope your videos will still be up for people to access because I have a feeling I may need to re-watch a few during the early months of my job placement, assuming I get one anytime soon. I attended one 3P04 lecture this semester with dr. Schwartz because some of my 3rd year friends complained about how difficult it was. After having witnessed that, I consider myself to be extremely lucky that I got to learn it from you, because you just so happened to have taught it during that one time. I wish you all the best with your endeavors and thank you for being an outstanding teacher and an unforgettable role model. " I really liked the collaborative midterm format for this course. I felt that the multiple choice format gave a lot of time for discussion compared to the collaborative midterms in 4M and 4N. I also really enjoyed the competition lecture where we looked for the optimum. Keep up the excellent work Kevin Thank you for teaching this awesome class! "I think I do like a lot of this new style learning, I know it is hard to make everyone happy and let everyone change from the traditional lectures. Maybe we could use the day off from lecture and use that as a tutorial session basically just recap, answer questions, do 1 complex example in the class together would be nice. So we can get our answers directly and clear without confusions. But I do like the quizzes, videos so I can go back and forth and make sure I am on track. I do strongly recommend a peer evaluation of the group members just like how we have it in 4N04 so that the grades are fair and motivate individuals so they will stay on track instead of ""do not care""." In regards to the question that asked "I mostly felt pressured to be at class". I chose agree, but in a good way. I attend 99% of classes, however for other students this is probably a good way to keep up with the material throughout the year. Also, I think its great because attending class really does make a difference in the overall experience of university, with a more advanced and educational way to learn than from a textbook. This was a great course. I think the online course format has worked well. Thanks! Enjoyed the course all around. A little constrained on time. It would be best if the videos were edited for the particular class. Also, when the slideshows matched the screen it was easier to follow along. I never found a useful way to study for this class, so any tips would be useful! Overall, the course was one of the best and most informative ones that I have taken thus far. I liked the 'learn by doing' style of teaching, but would however introduce a little more assistance during the class lecture sessions using the conventional style. A really cool take on a course. I would never suggest changing all engineering classes to this set-up, but it was nice to try something different. More time for working on problems together was great and be able to re-watch lectures was useful. Best of luck continuing to improve the course, as I know it'll get better and better. "Overall it was great choice taking this course. I learned very valuable material from the DOE and pretty much everything that was covered in the course which will be helpful in my career. Thank you Kevin" I would suggest if the videos were posted ahead of time (like a week before) so we can watch them and maybe practice on solving some problems before going to class. In that way, I believe that the in-class activities would be have been much more useful. I would also encourage the guest lecturers which I found them to be an awakening call for students who don't know whats waiting for them after graduating. I would also want to comment on the feedback/ grades of the assignments/activities. If there is a way in which we can receive our grades in a shorter period of time. All in all, its been a unique and beneficial course. I would prefer that this course be taught in this manner. Moreover, if possible other core engineering courses also taught this way as it allows students to be on top of their material and allows them to learn better. I thought it was great that there were online tutorials on how to do most functions in R, that was very helpful while I was doing the assignments. Additionally, I found that overall the videos were great. It is extremely convenient to be able to speed up the videos, or pause them when I am having difficulties. One suggestion would be to implement a test where the students need to use R, in order to ensure that each student is doing their best to become familiar with the software. "Overall, this course was extremely well-handled and professionally taught. While the delivery of the course was very non-typical, each aspect was very well managed and the course proceeded smoothly. While I have nothing but positive statements for the instructor and the way in which the course was taught, I personally found the course video approach to be significantly more challenging to gain the same level of understanding of the course material from. This is due to the necessity of developing a different method of note-taking, learning and application than I have been accustomed to in all prior courses. That being said, I recognize that, particularly in professional skill development in the future, this type of learning will without doubt be important: therefore exposure to this type of course at least once in undergrad is a valuable experience. " I'm not the greatest at statistics in general, but I heard good things about this course and that is why I took it. I'm very glad that I made this decision to take this course because I feel that the take away that I have gotten is extremely useful. I also enjoy the fact that I can see where the things I ahve learned can be used in my future, whereas learning about something and dreading when am I ever going to use this. Thank you. -you made the course A LOT less painful then the prior stats course that we had to take in third year, and I learned a lot more. It would have been great if there were lecture slides for each lecture (just like the 4G4 you teach), rather than slides being printed from the videos directly, which had many slides in them. I think the best way to move forward with the class is to add an interactive component to the videos. The number of questions on the exams were so high that I actually couldn't complete answering them! and even as a student you did not have enough time to think about a question for a bit. So, I saw that I can solve the question but since I did not have enough time, I couldn't show how much I've learnt from this course, unfortunately. Also, I'd like to thank you because of all your efforts that you put on this course to help us learning an essential subject of statics for engineers. "I would really like to thank you for one of the best courses I have taken so far. Every course I have taken with you has helped me learn concepts really well, and retain them for a long period of time. Your humble attitude and your implacable work ethic is truly inspirational. I would like if you give more general life advice too, I think these sort of advises are really beneficial and inspiring. I can still remember what you said in one of the video ""If your not experimenting in life, your not living life"". Also I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely apologize for anything I might have said to you, or my attitude towards learning. Also I would like to apologize for writing a very poor report, I knew I could have done better, and should have done better. I don't think I am a dumb student, but someone who definitely struggle with motivating my self. I often start of a semester really well but lose motivation over the semester. This is something I need to work on, and I struggle with this issue in all aspect of life, I start of things really well but can not finish them in the manner I started with. I would love to hear your feedback on how I can improve on this issue. I think you have the potential to revolutionize the education system, and create a system that is engaging, inspiring, and practical. I wish you the best in everything you do. My apologies for submitting this late. Kind regards, Saad" Overall the course was highly informative and i learned a lot. Video lectures were most helpful in final preparation. "For the most part, I enjoyed taking the course and the approach that you took towards teaching it. It felt really satisfying to be able to watch lectures at my own pace and on my own time, and I felt on top of the material for the majority of the course which I cannot say for other courses I have taken here. My only gripe with the course is that after 5 years of being taught in the standard lecturing style, it was a little difficult to adapt to the style of teaching in 4C03. Obviously this is the first of its kind, especially at McMaster but I think there is a huge opportunity enhance students' learning experience by peppering in courses taught this way throughout the undergraduate program. Personally, I think this is a big step in the right direction!" "Overall this was a unique experience and I would recommend this style of course for the future. I thought that the videos were a great way to optimize class time and have students learn St their own pace. I do believe that some lecture slots could have been added though. I have thoroughly enjoyed having you as my instructor for the past two years in various courses and can confidently say that you are the best instructor I have had. You put a great amount of effort into your courses and the results are great, thank you for your time and efforts!" This course was one of the best courses I've taken at Mac. I learnt a lot about Stats and about the DoEs. I even scanned my notes because I have a feeling that it will help me in my career. Thank you for the great experience Kevin! As always, it was a pleasure to be in Kevin Dunn's class as he is always trying to get students to be the best they can be. I look forward to seeing him on campus next year with new ideas for learning/classes. "I really enjoyed this course and believe the tools I have learned will be useful in my career. The new course format kept things interesting and I will probably take more online courses now. Thank you for the time and effort you put into making this a valuable course!" I think adding a poll of common problems that people can add on too in the forum would be nice. This way if something really was unclear in the video you do not need to wait for an email or someone from in class to say something. This way it is anonymous to us and people would be more likely to get their questions answered without feeling scared. For the instance that something is there that someone does not understand a TA or yourself could post trying to help in the forums. I though the course was well structured and well executed for it being the first time the prof has taught in this manner. It really forces you too keep up with the work instead of letting it all pile up and learning everything the night before and exam or midterm. "Great course. Really looking forward to applying what I have learned outside the class room. I feel stats is an extremely important tool to take away from undergrad, and I continually want to improve my understandings of it. Thank you Kevin for teaching us. " The course was very interesting and helpful for me. Most of the things was great except the grading specially for grad students. Overall, this class has taught me a lot about how statistics relate to the chemical engineering field. Moreover, the method of teaching was very effective to me, because I was always on top of the material. Overall, I enjoyed this course and would highly recommend it to to many of peers. I believe and intend to use the concepts that I have learned in my career. Although I was skeptical of the teaching style I grew to like the course structure. The course was very well organized and was a delivered in a highly effective manner! Maybe try teach this course all online Thank you for teaching so many courses in chemical engineering. It is amazing how we have days where we just have every lecture with you. I was always able to understand your lectures no matter what the subject is. It has been a great experience being in your class over the years.
