You had to do a short online quiz before every class. Can you please comment on the effectiveness of those quizzes? ------------------ If the objective behind this is to emphasize the sections of importance covered then the objective was completed. However, if the objective was to further understanding of material covered then I would say it was not very effective at achieving objective. It was just extra work to be done late at night and so the objective for the student was to get it out of their way. Providing more time for doing the quiz, which I expect will happen next year, will make it more effective at achieving the objective. The quizzes forced the student to prepare for the workshop. I liked the feature since there was no other option but to stay up to date with the material. Quizes got difficult as the course progressed. They did help in understanding the material. If i could change one thing about the quizzes is that it should be more general question related to the videos. They were good but it would be better if the questions were even more similar to the ones seen in the midterm or exam I liked how you could get the answer from just watching the videos. Although, at times some quizzes were very challenging and tedious. I liked the fact that it forced me to not fall behind in the course. In the future, I guess you could make some of the quizzes optional, like for example, you give us 25 quizzes but you might mark 20 of them. It was a good relation to the material covered in the videos posted for the class. However, the frequency of the quizzes was way to high, along with the fact the quizzes and sometimes the video lectures were posted very late the day before the class, not giving students much time to schedule the quizzes. The quizzes were quite stressful having to be done in a relatively short period of time between the posting and due date. Because quizzes were posted in the evening, I found it inconvenient and difficult to arrange for an opportunity to discuss our understanding of the material with friends. Although the quizzes were to be done independently, it would have been helpful to have had the chance to clarify with others. The quizzes helped in understanding the material and preparing for the next class Most of the quizzes were good, but I fund that in some of the quizzes the content on the quiz had no relevance to the videos that were needed to be watched beforehand. Very effective. I really like the idea of having the quiz because it helps so much for the in-class activity the following day. They were not too easy or hard, and I think they are very effective at helping learn the material. The time that the quiz was released was too close to its deadline. The quizzes themselves were good practice to get familiar with material before in class activities. One improvement is to create a database of questions and assign random questions to different students so every student does not have the same questions as this encourages discussion between students with regards to their questions (even if the concepts are the same and the numerical answers are different) instead of blatant one person does the question and the other one just clicks the same answer and moves on. I liked because it keeps you on track with the course. There are so many topics covered every week that is hard to find a personal good pace for studying. The quizzes are a way to force you to organize your schedule. But for me this was stressful sometimes. There were times that I was not able to read before doing the quiz, and only with the information from the videos I was not able to answer all questions properly. I think focusing only on the written material or the videos content will be more benefit. And have a different quiz section, that could be done anytime during the course, for those who want more in-depth questions to work with (I know that we have some in the textbook, but usually I didn't have time to look for those, and the textbook sometimes has a content that was not covered). They were good at the beginning. Near the end of the semester or just when school got very time consuming (Final projects and assignments) it was very last minute and some quizzes went by where i just would guess random answers to try and get some sort of mark. I didn't like how late they were available. I would have like to have had a few days to watch video and do quiz. I don't like watching the video until I have the quiz it also felt like a lot of work. I really liked having to complete the quizzes, however I preferred it when the quizzes were based strictly on the videos, as it made sure that I understood all the material that I watched. The quizzes were helpful to recall information but I found them difficult and very long! I would end up just guessing a lot of the time because I had other course work that I wanted to get done instead. I would recommend them being shorter, but I really like the idea of weekly quizzes! They we tedious, but effective studying for tests. I would much rather have them due following the class time say at 11pm, as opposed to before the class. This would alow for a more heavy marking scheme on the in-class workshops. The quizzes were very effective in terms of learning and understanding the concepts. I liked the scope and type of questions being asked. I didn't like that some quizzes were not short as they're supposed to be. Some of the harder questions and answers should also be discussed in class. Some of the quizzes were short while others were too long, that happens because the videos themselves weren't evenly divided on lectures. Some lectures we had to watch 30 minutes of videos while other were 4-5 minutes. Also, I would like if we can get to drop the lowest 2 or 3 quizzes or something like that. I forgot to hit submit for one of my quizzes and got a zero. and there are one or two quizzes that I did poorly in because I did not have the time to watch the videos and ended up guessing the answers The quizzes were great for learning. The quizzes guaranteed that the material covered in the videos was learnt. The quizzes were very effective portion of the learning process. I liked that the quizzes had solutions provided right after the deadline. Checking the solutions and seeing where errors were made is a great way to learn. I did not like the amount of time each quiz took to complete. I would change all the questions to multiple choice questions. The quizzes were effective towards the learning experience, however, they required a great amount of effort and time. Changing the format of every question to multiple choice would reduce the time needed to complete them and hopefully not take too much away from the learning experience. Overall, the quizzes were very effective. The quizzes are a great idea, but like I've said this on other reviews.. Never make anything be due early morning. Best due time for anything (which can work for these quizzes) is the midnight before the day of the class. for other assignments projects, please make them be due anytime after 4pm-midnight. In hindsight, I think the quizzes were very useful (although I didn't really enjoy them in weeks where I would have multiple midterms and projects due), especially when studying for the exam right now. However, I didn't like how the quizzes were often posted in the late afternoon/evening before they were due. Because of this, I often didn't get to the quizzes until it was late (or really early the next morning) which led to me being tired when working on the quizzes and usually resulted in me not being really effective in thinking through the concepts. Forced me to keep up to the course The quizzes were useful especially because they provided a taste of what was to come for the in class assignments. Therefore, my thinking was already geared towards the specific topic or calculations were already tried in the quizzes, and if they were incorrect, the in class exercises ironed out where I went wrong in the calculation. I liked that the quizzes pushed me to learn the material and keep up with the class. I didn't like that some of the quizzes were quite long. Useful. Sometimes the questions were slightly ambiguous. Overall the quizzes were effective and helped me to understand the material. I liked that the quizzes force you to keep up with the video lectures throughout the term, as well as practice the concepts. Sometimes I found them too long (based the amount of time we were given to complete them before the deadline) When checking the answers the next day, sometimes they were incomplete or not thoroughly explained which wasn't helpful when trying to figure out my mistakes. At the time, it seemed excessive and sometimes annoying to have constant quizzes, sometimes being released last minute. At the end of the term it really paid off though and I found that being forced to keep up with the course tremendously decreased the amount of studying I needed to do for the exam. The quizzes were a good motivation to stay up with the course material. I would definitely keep doing them, especially with the incentive to get a certain percentage, because otherwise people will fall behind on the material. It would be super useful if the quizzes were ordered in reverse chronological order. Did not like when they were released, as they took awhile to complete if you wanted to get a decent mark. A lot of times found myself rushing through them which resulted in me getting poor marks on a few. I liked the ones where you got more than one attempt. The quizzes were somewhat effective, as it made sure that everyone read the material, but what if someone didn't understand the video content properly and his question (via forum posting) isn't answered before the quiz deadline. It is equivalent to not reading the material. A better way to go about this would be, to have a timeline/deadline to finish off watching the videos and then have a Q&A at a common time before the quiz such that everyone understands everything before attempting the quiz. There can also be a post-class quiz instead of a pre-class quiz in which case each question has been answered in the previous class. Quizzes were really helpful for learning and staying on top of material, but again, were released too late for my liking. 24 hours would have given more time in people's various schedules. The quizzes were effective in learning the material as I would do the quiz right away after reading the book or watching the videos. I did not like the fact that you cannot see your submitted answers for quizzes with 2 or more attempts. I liked how some quizzes had multiple attempts. Overall, I liked the course and found it different in a good way. The online quizzes were a good way to test our knowledge of the material and kind of prepare us before writing the in class activities. There was generally not enough time to complete these quizzes given that sometimes we would get the videos later in the evening of the night before they were due. This could be quite frustrating at some points in time. With that being said, it was good to have a constant flow of quizzes because it kept you up to date with the videos. The quizzes were closely related to the videos and/or textbook. The length was appropriate, and the Coursera quiz setup is extremely functional and well-developed. Generally speaking, the quizzes were a good way to ensure that all students kept up with the course content. The quizzes were very effective.Watching the videos might make you feel like you understand the material fully. But the quizzes showed where you lacked the most. And were you should go back and study again. It also forcefully made you prepare for the class activity which is only fair since the class activity was in groups. -Good synopsis of the videos and apply new knowledge. -videos/quizzes weren't out as early as I would have liked -some quizzes were kind of too long The quizzes were very effective and challenging. I did have to spend significant amount of time for a quiz worth very little marks. Shorter quizzes would have been better as they took very long time to complete. I didn't like how they were released on such short notice, especially when they were released the night I had capstone class. Quiz were great, and they really made you think, but sometimes they were quit long. I would limit the length of the Quiz to no more than 4-5 questions. Those quizzes although increased our burden a little bit, but they were well worth it. I learned many things through these quizzes. The quizzes were great for learning but it was annoying to have to do a quiz before every class. However, I don't resent that because we were forewarned in the course outline. The quiz length was appropriate for the amount of content taught in the videos. Overall, the quizzes kept me on my toes and solidified the concepts taught. I felt that the quizzes covered the material very well and were an appropriate level of difficulty. I also liked how marks were given for correctly choosing or not choosing each answer in the multiple choice questions. It would have been better if the quizzes were posted earlier so that I would have a more flexible schedule to complete them. I think it really helped me understand the material. I was able to soak up more information in little time with the quizzes. The quizzes were a great incentive to watch the videos and prepare properly for lecture the next day. Again, it would have been better if they were posted with more of a buffer before lecture so that there was more flexibility for the time in which they could be completed. I think the quizzes were good because it quickly tested you on everything you just seen in the video, it also provided motivation when watching to he videos. They definitely did their job, I had to go back and refer to the videos/textbook to answer some questions. They were also pretty critical to do and understand for the in-class activities. I think you should somehow tie these into the discussion forums. Have the regular portion of the quiz that people do individually, but have one Challenge Question that will be open all week for each person. The procedure to solve it would be the same for all, but everyone may have slightly different numbers. Everyone has 3 attempts to solve it. Forum participation marks could come from the discussion of solving these. One underlying problem is just most people collaborate and solve stuff within a set group of friends. They communicate through everything BUT the forums. Moving that discussion to the forums is challenging. Having to do these quizzes before each lecture helped a lot on being on top of the material taught in class. It also helped me with solving the in class activities. The only thing I disliked about the quizzes is that There was too many questions per quiz and too many quizzes in total. It might have been helpful at the beginning, but when the worklaod increased, it was more about getting the answers instead of doing it properly since it takes too long everyday to watch the videos, understand and then do a 9 question quiz. It would have been much better if there were 1 quiz per week. Those quizzes are effective. But maybe one quiz per week or a quiz can be done during the weekend. There is really no time sometimes to watch the videos and do the quizzes. Quizzes are good idea but to have those ones that we can have at least 2 attempts would be more helpful since I, as a student, will have less stress and know that I have one attempt more; So, I have higher efficiency and better outcomes on such kinds of quizzes. I found some of the choices to vague! There was a lot of word manipulation in the answers given and as someone who English is not her first language a lot of times I lost mark simply because I did not understand the word manipulation. But overall I think the online quizzes were very helpful and increased my learning efficiency. In general, giving students quizzes is good to test their knowledge, however with the current amount of workload as a graduate student who also attends classes in the evening and work full-time I had a very little time to prepare for them as the videos were not posted until the evening before class which was very frustrating and I was never FULLY prepared for the quizzes. The quizzes definitely helped. If there were no quizzes I would have probably just watched the videos once and move on. With the quizzes I found myself taking notes as I watch the videos as well as watching the same video several times. Quizzes were far too frequent. With the sheer number of quizzes and the short time to do them in considering other classes, I frequently guessed on longer questions in order to save time. These quizzes were really helpful because they kept me up to date of the content covered in class. I found the quizzes to be helpful to understand the material a little better. One interesting thing I noticed is I never went back to check on my answers the next day to know where I went wrong until near midterm that I looked into it and realized I misunderstood the concept. I suggest the students should look into their quizzes the next day so they clarify any misunderstanding right away. Perhaps, students should take 5 minutes of the beginning class to quickly go over the quiz to check for mistakes if they made. I would really appreciate if the quizzes are shorter because the amount time it takes to complete the quiz is very time consuming. Maybe 4 or 5 questions maximum for each class should be considered. These quizzes are very useful and emphasis the new knowledge. I think some of the questions are too hard, especially the question have multiple solutions. The second chance of the is very useful to me. The short online quizzes were a good concept for being prepared for next class. But I recommend that quizzes be made available at least 48 hours prior to deadline. It was overwhelming for sure during the 'peak' time. The questions helped me a lot, of course. However, I would prefer having one quiz per week even though it would be longer. I like the online quiz a lot, because that ensure (myself at least) won't slack off and make sure that I will finish watching the video, learn the content and apply it to the quiz. I think it is just time consuming sometimes, because we either night class or assignment at the same time, so we might need to watch the video after we come back from night class and watch the videos then do the quiz, which will be pretty late at night already. I know the page number is posted on forums and we can go study ahead of time if we want, but sometimes it is hard because the quiz questions is not posted ahead of time. I know that it will not work the way you want, because you want us to study and then apply the knowledge to the quiz instead of working backward eg. posting the quiz and find answer. That's way is time consuming from my point of view, but it definitely keep me on track! The quizzes were good review of material. The only improvement suggestion would be to release the quizzes earlier, so we can do them when it is most convenient. I liked how the quizes were laid out as it allowed me to test and challenge myself on the material I had recently learned. Also it allowed me to stay upto date with the material being taught. I did not find them all that helpful. It did play a roll of coinciding with the videos that we watched, then leading to the class work for the next day. The total weight of all the quizzes are worth just as much as the midterm and I spent ample time trying to get a good grade on the quizzes because I thought it would help prepare me for midterm but it did not. I think the weighting for the quiz is not justified enough because of the amount of time spent towards it seemed like it should be worth more. It was a little annoying have a quiz prior to every class (although only 2 per week) but I think they really helped prepare for the in-class activities and was kind of a way to force learning throughout the semester. Often in classes I find myself trying to memorize and drill home concepts days prior to a test or exam, while with this format I felt like I was on top of the material for the majority of the semester. A lot of work but in the end I think it was well worth it. I liked the quizzes for the fact that they kept me on top of the material, as you could not answer the questions without watching the videos or reading the text. I was not a fan of the timing of the videos as I usually had to complete the quiz after night class. This was just a minor annoyance however. The quizzes were taxing sometimes but overall I believe they were useful and I would recommend keeling them in the future. I really liked the quiz aspect of the course. It allowed me to see what I should know, and what I need to work on. On the other hand, the quiz was often posted the night before it's due, making it difficult to complete on time. They were useful. The first month of the course, we had to spend 2-3 hours to watch the videos and then take the quizzes between 7 to 9 pm ( sometimes later). But later It became better cause we had access to PID and the quizzes. The quizzes were very useful to study for the first midterm and should definitely be continued. They helped me keep up (for the most part) with the content but were sometimes annoying to complete with the other tasks that I had going on. However, I was able to manage everything O.K and it was more personal issue that anything else. The quiz are good for me to learn, but if the quiz are release a little bit earlier, then it would be great.
