1. Please explain the typical way that you would use the course website and videos during the week? ------------------ I usually check coursera everyday for announcements. But on the day before quizzes, I would check in constantly to see if videos or the quiz had been posted.( I would do textbook readings before the videos were posted too.) I always checked in on class days, to check my quiz answers, and for in-class activities. If I had time that week, I would go back to review quiz/videos if I had difficulty with a topic. So typically, I would be on Coursera frequently during the week, and then depending on what was upcoming in stats/my other courses I would check in on the weekend. I used the website for any announcements and the forums to see if there are any postings. In terms of the videos, I would watch them before the classes and re-watch if i didn't understand a certain part. I referred to the course videos constantly in order to complete the quizzes and to take notes. I tried my best to review all the new videos posted for classes that week on my weekends. Every Monday and Thursday I watched the videos and took the online quizzes. I reviewed the lectures with higher speed during the weekends. On Mondays and Thursdays I would check periodically to see when both the videos and quiz were posted. Once they were both up I would watch the videos and and complete the quiz. I would also check the front page on each of these days to see if there were any new announcements. The day before class I would watch the videos required and then once the quiz came out I finished it. Other than that if there were deadlines coming i would frequently use it for aid. I didn't spend a lot of time on the course website. I watched the videos, usually in clumps, and looked at the announcements to see important information. I would watch the videos, then complete the quiz right after. I would also print the lecture slides off and wrote notes on them as I watched the video. I would read watch the videos first and read the slides afterwards. I was often pressed for time, so I would watch videos quickly while simultaneously answering quiz questions. I would rarely remember all the concepts and usually had to rewatch videos. I would watch the videos the night before the class, so that it's fresh before class. The same goes with the course website. Being a graduate student, I had enough commitments during the week (project works, etc.) so it was a little unmanageable being active on Coursera daily. Would check the website almost every day for updates and would try and watch the videos before each quiz. Sometimes would use the textbook when doing the quiz instead of watching the videos. I only ever went to the course website to see messages from Kevin, or to watch videos and submit quizzes. The additional pages for each unit looked neat, but I never used them. Also used the text a lot. I would watch videos the morning before class typically I found myself generally watching the videos and completing the quizzes last minute most of the time. I would watch the videos at 1.5x or 1.75x and quickly skim the textbook if needed before doing the quiz. I rarely used the course forums or the solutions to the in-class activities. Watch them the day prior to class. I would usually watch the videos on the days the quizzes were due, but I would occasionally get ahead of things by watching on the weekends. I often used the R tutorial to make sure I coded things properly. I only visited the website on the day before each lecture I watch the videos and do the quiz. I would check in every couple days to read the course announcements. I would watch the videos and do the quiz the night/morning before class. This was typically how I used the course website. Watch the videos at 1.5x speed after Track practice. If misunderstood or a distraction came about, the content would be slowed to 1.25x and rewatched. Typically the quizzes on the course website were done at 8am before the 9:25am deadline. (~10min walk to class). Website was checked twice a week for course updates such as midterm dates and assignment postings. Classmates usually inform me of other changes before I see them. Would use the website to watch video while answering quiz questions other then that did not spend a whOle lot of time on it - I would watch the videos necessary for the class the night before at 1.5X and do the quiz, and not go back to the website until I needed to watch more videos. Before the midterm and Exam I rewatched the videos and redid all the quizzes. I would check the module every week to see what textbook pages I should cover and what videos were posted. I would sometimes check the discussion forums to see if there were any interesting questions. I use it mainly just for watching or re-watching lecture videos. I tend to prefer zooming through the lectures first to get an idea of whole lesson, then re-watching it at a more casual pace to truly try to focus and take take notes. This is why I really appreciate and enjoy having the video lecture format. I cannot follow and comprehend new material upon hearing it for the first time anymore like I used to and this course structure makes it much easier for me and my adapted learning style. The night that the quiz was made available, typically after night class, I'd log in, watch the videos I was missing at 2x speed and answer the quiz questions, guessing on questions that would take more than 5 minutes to figure out. Go over the videos and do the quizes I would typically start by looking at how many videos were posted before the first class of the week. This would let me know how much time I should dedicate to the new material. If the videos are not posted yet, a sudden burst of videos would disrupt my academic routine. Thankfully, the videos are very easy to follow and concise. Once viewed, I would start doing the quizzes. During the videos, I would use R at the same time if I felt it was necessary. Lastly, I would take down notes while watching the videos. Check videos, quizes, etc. I would watch the videos before class and complete the quiz. As I was watching the videos I would take my own notes instead of printing out the slides and bring them into class to help with the in class activities. The course website was used to check announcements and do the quizzes. Most videos were watched on the website but some with stream problems were viewed on YouTube. Having the videos on YouTube was an incredibly helpful idea. Watch the videos required for the quizzes. Complete the quizzes. Go on discussion forums if I need any clarity. Check the website couple of times a week for any announcements. Course website was great, it contained everything we needed at anytime during the week. Would spend the weekend to Monday night watching the videos for Tuesday class then have to rush for the videos that were needed after night classes from Tuesday to Thursday for Fridays class. Check whatever notifications that I get sent through emails.Check the videos in the day they are supposed to be there.Watch the videos and then do the quizzes. (1) Review the videos when they became available, making notes on them. (2) Complete the associated quiz. (3) If any portion of the in-class reports was less than crystal-clear, double check the solutions when they became available. I would usually download the videos once posted on Coursera, and watch them on the same night before doing the online quizzes. I would also review the solutions of the activities once every two weeks. However, used it rarely for the R tutorials. During the beginning of the term, since the quizzes covered the material from the textbook I would read the book and start the quiz early in the day and compare answers with friends at night before submitting. After the winter break due to heavy course load I would watch the videos at night and try to finish the quiz before morning just before the time it was due. Sometimes I had to stay up till 2 am or 3 am depending on the topic which made it harder to wake up. I watched the videos during the week, maybe two days before class. But sometimes I was able to watch right before starting the quiz for the class, so it was not always effective, because I couldn't do more reading. I was always looking at each module page to find extra content (such as papers) from the topics, and some useful R tutorial. Every Monday afternoon I would watch the videos for the following day and complete the quiz at night. Since we had our Capstone class every Thursday night, I would watch the videos for the Friday class every Wednesday and then do the quiz Thursday night. Other than that, I would occasionally access the website for updates/information about twice a week to keep myself updated. Typically check it daily, ironically to see what was going on in the discussion forums, even though I didn't post much in them. I watched the videos as early as possible, and did the regular quizzes after. I checked the answers to the in-class activity answers if something was really confusing. I liked how you posted links to interesting articles/TED Talks. I DO have a complaint about the layout of the website. I do not like how when you first log-in it brings you to the announcement page. The same thing happens when you click on the course icon in the top left-hand corner. I want it to bring me to the current module we are working on. Have the announcements in a scroll bar within the module page. I would typically check the website a few times a week to see the announcements. I would usually go on the website the night before class to watch the videos and complete the quizzes. If I came across some questions I would refer to the forums. I would typically watch the video video without taking any notes. Then I would do the quiz right after, as the content was quit fresh in my head. Sometimes I would have to refer to the slides, or re-watch a part of the video. Mostly, I downloaded the videos and watch them during the day the night before class I would do the quizzes and watch the videos at the same time. I would watch course videos prior to the class and then complete the quizzes. After completing activities in class, if I felt that I did not fully understand the topic, I would go back and re-watch the videos, sometimes at a faster speed. I would check the topics of the discussion board to see if anything seemed useful. Then I would watch all the videos, make notes on the PDF slides I printed off. I would do the quiz after I had watched the week's videos. Usually, I would log in, watch all the new videos, and then attempt the quiz. Also, I would on a regular basis check the posted announcements. I will usually check on for daily post from the instructor every day at least, since a lot of time I will get email notifications so I will check the website right away if I get an email. I will watch videos on the night it is posted and do the quiz. I will check the solutions to in class activities mainly before midterms, or help for assignments. If needed I will post question to clarify or answers others post. I would watch videos the night before class and check in on the forums occasionally. I would do the quizzes the night before class as well. This is kind of silly, but I enjoyed checking back to the website every week to see the progress bar fill... Nice motivation to keep pushing on! I would check for videos the day before lecture. Try to watch most of them and answer the quiz when it comes out. I would look to see if the videos are posted a day before class, and usually was not the case. Sometimes I would receive an email and then would usually watch the video right away when it was posted, or the night before class. Wath the videos to prepare for the quizzes and in-class activities. Also go through the solutions of the in-class activities. Like i mentioned before I did not enjoy Monday and Thursday because thats when the videos were released around 6 pm and I had night class till 10pm. So after my night class i was exhausted and did not felt like watching videos and doing the quiz. I would stay up till 2 or 3 am watching the videos and doing the quiz. The next day in the morning at 9 am i had to do class activities just like everyone but i was sometimes inefficient because i did not get enough sleep. Watched videos before the online quiz. Checked the announcement page regularly. I regularly watch the video the night before every Wednesday. I would check the course website probably every other day to see if there were new announcements. For probably half the quizzes I read the course textbook to prepare. I also watched the videos regularly (the same day that they were posted). I would spend at least an hour doing for each quiz after watching the videos. This is where the content for the course was -- and unlike a typical lecture, where you miss a lot of content, and it doesn't get transcribed, I found it less necessary to go online and search for the material / theory, to teach to myself. I would set aside my evening before class, watch all the required videos, and taking written notes while watching, then I completed the quiz I normally would go look at the announcements, then watch the videos and do the quiz. If a topic in the video or previous videos were unclear, I sometimes look at the course forums.
